View of a stream of lava as it entered the sea at Nanawale, East part of Hawaii, June 1840. The fountain is 25 or 30 miles up in the interior of the country but below Kilauea. Na Kaleohano i kakau. Na Nuuanu i kaha.

View of lava giving off great clouds of steam, gases and smoke. The lava surrounds a row of three hills. Letters A through D in the image correspond to explanatory key below. "A.A.A. Stream of lava. B.B.B. Hills of volcanic sand scoria &c. C.C.C. Sulphurous gases, smoke steam &c. from fused lava below. D. A volume of smoke gass [sic], &c. from out of the sea some distance from land."
