The treaty of 1794 between the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy and the United States government is still in effect, although it has been violated many times. It was drawn up as a document between two equal partners because the Six Nations at the time was too powerful a force to be restricted as other Indian nations had been (Schein). Here Captain Hendrick’s plea for the white man to keep liquor away from the Iroquois people is followed on this broadside with a typical white Christian sermon against liquor, a speech that would have little relevance to the Indian mind.
