Naval recruiting song, "tune All hands a hoy to the anchor." : Together with An Irishman's observation on British politics

Naval Recruiting Song is modeled on Charles Dibdin’s song “Jack at the Windlass” from The Quizes (1793). A spirited pro-navy song, it makes a good recruiting song for USS President, launched April 1, 1800, in New York City. Unlike most of Coverly’s topical songs that seem to be local compositions and are not found on other broadsides or songsters, this may have originated elsewhere. It appeared in the Windham (CT) Herald on September 4, 1800, and in Skylark (1814; R. Keller, Early American Songsters). Coverly may have found and reprinted the text in 1812 to help recruit seamen during one of President’s two trips from Boston, sailing on October 3, 1812, and again on April 30, 1813.

It is paired with a song recalling the victory of Rogers over Lille Belt in May 1811, An Irishman’s Observation on British Politics.
