Capture of Little York: or Dearborn victorious in Canada

A lengthy “letter” from General Peter B. Porter (1773-1844), congressman for the Niagara District, precedes the song text of “Capture of Little York” on this sheet, outlining the attack and victory at York, the capital of Upper Canada, now Toronto, Ontario, on April 27, 1813.

In 6/8 rhythm with a chorus like Decatur’s Victory, the tune for this text is probably “Paul Jones’s Victory.” Here the chorus is the same throughout. The text first justifies the action in high-flown phrases, then reviews the fight in more common language. The final verse is a pro-war cheer.
