Full credit to General Edward Tupper for the victory at Moravian Town and the comment that Tecumseh was captured but still alive (verse 8) suggests that the author of the lyrics took his information about the battle from early newspaper reports. Reports in the Boston Independent Chronicle from January 25 and February 4, 1814, repeated in many other newspapers, claim that “Tupper’s Brigade” defeated the Indians and captured Tecumseh in the Battle of the Thames. The truth lay elsewhere. Tupper only commanded a wing of the Ohio militia in Harrison’s troops and Tecumseh was killed in the battle. The reports may have stemmed from a widely copied report in “a New-Lisbon (Ohio) paper.” A long report of the battle states that General Tupper’s “superior force” vanquished the enemy and Tecumseh was “now in the town of Franklinton” (Charleston [SC] City Gazette, January 30, 1814). Local pride here outweighed historical accuracy.
