Verses in Vogue with the Vulgar

A New thought on time and eternity; or, The difference between to day and to morrow. (An invitation to youth for a new year)

As “Time and Eternity; or, the Difference between To Day and To Morrow,” this didactic text appeared in the Norwich (CT) Courier on April 6, 1808. The text beneath the verse instructs the child who has received the broadside, perhaps, as the subtitle suggests, as a New Year’s gift, to examine his or her life in this spirit. This kind of text appears to have been often used by different authors as there are others using the same general technique, but bearing no direct connection, such as Massachusetts Calendar (3), and Elizabeth Williams: Her Book, 1745.
