Lines composed on the death of General Washington

Even while Washington was president, most people continued to refer to him as “General Washington,” his impact as a charismatic war leader perhaps more immediate that the delicate diplomatic job he performed as president. This sophisticated lyric has an unusual verse structure and was probably never intended to be sung. The poem traces Washington’s career from the confrontation in Boston to Yorktown, his retirement, presidency, and final service in 1798. The author was either unaware of Washington’s less-than-stellar French and Indian War service or chose not to mention it.
