The Farmer's daughter: a new song

This long-lived lyric appeared on many nineteenth-century English slip ballads and was collected in the twentieth century in Maine. An English version was recorded by Peter Kennedy and Alan Lomax (Horace Beck 108-9; Folksongs of Britain).[1] While it would appear that the burden “whack, fol de rol, de rol, &c.” would suggest a period tune, none has been located to match this text.
