The Embargo, a new song--tune "Yankee Doodle"

While this text, like The Embargo: A Favorite New Song, is set to the tune of “Yankee Doodle,” here the author adopts the literary conceits of the original “Father and I went down to Camp” song (see The Yankees Return From Camp). He uses the image of the country simpleton who does not recognize ordinary things and repeats many of the phrases from the 1775 song that must still have been in public memory in considerable detail. The last verse suggests that this text was written after the repeal of the Embargo of 1807.

Because as sure as death and rates [i.e., taxes],
The Embargo’s gone to sea, Sir.

Coverly evidently printed a second copy of this same broadside using different cuts, showing three ships.
