A reception, hosted by AAS Councilor Paul S. Sperry, begins at 6 p.m.

The reception continues until 9 p.m.
Hester Blum, AAS member since 2013, is Professor of English at the Pennsylvania State University. Among the challenges that extreme environmental conditions presented to historical polar expeditions, perhaps the least known are the difficulties that Arctic and Antarctic voyagers faced in operating tabletop printing presses in subzero temperatures. This talk illuminates how (and why) polar expedition members printed ephemera—newspapers, menus, almanacs, playbills, and broadsides—in the long darkness of polar winters.
All elected members are invited to attend either in person or via Zoom, and are asked to register by contacting Jessica Howland at jhowland@mwa. All members who register will receive the slate of nominees for membership via email in advance of the meeting.
You are are welcome to bring one or two guests.
