Abby Kelley Foster (1811-1887) was a leading nineteenth-century abolitionist and women's rights activist. Abby dedicated her life to social justice, working relentlessly to end both race and gender prejudice. At a time when society demanded that women be silent, submissive and obedient, Abby was none of these. Sponsored the Worcester Women's History Project.
Beating the Demon- John B. Gough
John B. Gough (1817-1886), temperance reformer, was known in the nineteenth century as the "Apostle of Cold Water." Gough was a recovering alcoholic whose dramatic lectures about his own fight for sobriety made him an international celebrity.
