Finishers and embellishers

fringers prang.jpg

In December, 1884, Wide Awake magazine wrote a fictionalized story of how Prang produced his famous Christmas cards. It follows a group of high school girls from Madison, Wisconsin, as they tour the more famous sights in Boston. One girl wishes to visit the Roxbury factory of L. Prang & Co. to see how her beloved Christmas cards are made. The girls peek in on a meeting between Prang and artist Lizbeth Humphrey, visit the press room and see a progressive proof book. They also see the finishing room, as seen in this image, where some cards are embellished with satin fringe, or are mounted on heavy stock.
