Early autumn on Esopus Creek, Kingston, N.Y.
Description
This landscape is one of L. Prang & Cos. first published chromolithographs. Part of a set of two, depicting scenes by Alfred T. Bricher, the set sold for $12, a large amount of money at the time, especially compared with scenic lithographs published by Currier & Ives of which the largest sold for no more than five dollars. Prang wanted his chromos to look like oil paintings and be available to the general public at a lower cost than an original artwork.
The above price list was pasted onto the back of the print, giving the cost of other popular prints for October, 1869. Prices range from $1.50 to $15.00.
