Planning Your Research Visit
The library is open, free of charge, to readers over the age of 18 with projects that our collections support. High school students who need to use the collection must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Before entering the reading room all readers must:
- Present identification.
New readers are required to present two forms of identification (one bearing a photograph, e.g., a driver's license or passport) upon their first visit to the library. To protect readers' privacy, Social Security cards and credit cards are not acceptable forms of identification. Readers are issued a library card that they should bring with them on every visit. Readers' registrations must be updated annually.
- Be registered in the AAS online request system
Registration in our online request system, My Web AAS (or MWA). may be completed in advance of your visit.
- Receive an in-person orientation to AAS collections and procedures.
First-time readers will meet with a staff member in the introductory gallery to discuss their research interests and to review AAS's reading room policies and procedures, including how to use My Web AAS, our online request system. Readers who have registered online will be able to submit requests for collection materials from the catalog in advance of their first visit, but nothing will be retrieved until they have completed in-person orientation.
