William Newell Hosley

William Newell Hosley Jr. (elected April 2001) died on July 2, 2025, after a long career in historic preservation. He was a curator at the Wadsworth Atheneum (1980‒97); director of Connecticut Landmarks, a statewide network of historic house museums (1997‒2004); and executive director of the New Haven Museum (2006‒9). Hosley curated numerous exhibitions and wrote several books, including The Great River: Art and Society of the Connecticut Valley (1985) and Colt: The Making of an American Legend (1996), which recounts the story of the gun manufacturer Samuel Colt and his wife, Elizabeth.
