Giant of the Worcester historical community Thomas L. Doughton (elected October 2002) died on February 3, 2024. Doughton, who spent much of his adult life tracing the history of Worcester’s intertwined African American and Nipmuc communities, was a driving force in developing the Worcester Black History Trail, a series of historic markers unveiled in 2022. Doughton served for two decades on the College of the Holy Cross faculty, as senior lecturer in the Center for Interdisciplinary and Special Studies. For more than twenty-five years, Doughton was a regular presence at AAS, conducting research and delivering talks. In 2009 he co-taught the AAS K–12 teacher institute “Citizenship, Property, Identity, and Representation: The Historical Journey of Southern New England’s Native Peoples.”
