Robert Middlekauff (elected October 1983) died March 10, 2021. A preeminent historian of early America, Middlekauff was on the faculty of the University of California, Berkeley, from 1962 until his retirement in 2000, serving also as provost and dean. Among his books are The Mathers: Three Generations of Puritan Intellectuals, 1596–1728 (1971; winner of the Bancroft Prize); The Glorious Cause: The American Revolution, 1763–1789 (1982); and most recently Washington’s Revolution: The Making of America’s First Leader (2015). Middlekauff also served as president of the Huntington Library, Art Gallery, and Botanical Gardens in the 1980s.
