Richard V. Buel Jr.

Revolutionary War and early national US historian Richard V. Buel Jr. (elected October 2000) died on November 22, 2023. Buel served on the faculty of Wesleyan University for four decades. He wrote and edited several books that contribute significantly to the scholarship on Revolutionary America, including Securing the Revolution: Ideology in American Politics, 1789–1815. With his wife Joy Day Buel, he cowrote The Way of Duty: A Woman and Her Family in Revolutionary America (1984), an intimate social history that inspired the film Mary Silliman’s War (1994). His extensive professional service included serving as associate editor of the journal History and Theory (for twenty-two years) and as president of the New England Historical Association.
