Richard Stewart Kirkendall

Richard S. Kirkendall (elected October 1978), professor of history, emeritus, at the University of Washington, died on August 26, 2024. A leading scholar of New Deal and post–World War II politics, especially the Truman administration, Kirkendall wrote or edited more than ten books. These included Social Scientists and Farm Politics in the Age of Roosevelt (1966); The Global Power: The United States Since 1941 (1974); The Truman Encyclopedia (1989); and Harry’s Farewell: Interpreting and Teaching the Truman Presidency (2004). He served as executive secretary of the Organization of American Historians from 1973 to 1981 and served for many years on the board of the Harry S. Truman Library.
