1936-2024
Advertising executive and innovator Richard Manney (elected April 1988) died on July 2, 2024. He created companies in television promotion and advertising and at the 1964 World’s Fair introduced an early version of Yelp (which he called Directomat Inc.). He became fascinated with books as a teenager, selling the Encyclopedia Britannica door to door to support his family and encouraging the New York Public Library to carry science fiction. He collected rare books and manuscripts, including first editions and autographed copies of English and American novels, children’s classics, and religious and political works.
