Richard A. Crawford

1935-2024

Richard Crawford (elected April 1975) died on July 23, 2024. The Hans T. David Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Musicology at the University of Michigan, Crawford played a leading role in developing the study of American music. Since the 1960s he conducted research on early American musicians. He was a founder of the Sonneck Society (later renamed the Society for American Music) and served as 34 president of the American Musicological Society. Crawford held a US Steel Foundation Fellowship at AAS in 1972–73. His project, A Bibliography of American Sacred Music Imprints Through 1810, completed the magisterial work begun by Allen Perdue Britton and Irving Lowens. AAS published it in 1990 as American Sacred Music Imprints, 1698– 1810: A Bibliography.
