Martin E. Marty (elected April 1978) died on February 25, 2025. The Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of the History of Modern Christianity at the University of Chicago, Marty was long considered the most influential historian and interpreter of American religion, for the broader public as well as fellow scholars. He wrote more than 50 books and supervised 115 dissertations. An ordained minister in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Selma, attended the Second Vatican Council as a Protestant observer, and helped found Clergy and Laymen Concerned About Vietnam.
