Larzer Ziff

Larzer Ziff (elected October 1979), the Caroline Donovan Professor of English, Emeritus, at Johns Hopkins University, died on November 25, 2024. Ziff was a leading scholar of American literary culture and intellectual history, whose expertise ranged from the Puritans through the late nineteenth century and from canonical literary texts to less appreciated genres. His prodigious scholarship included The Career of John Cotton: Puritanism and the American Experience (1962), The American 1890s: Life and Times of a Lost Generation (1966), and Mark Twain (2004). A hallmark of his work was his attention to the intellectual and cultural contexts of literary production and dissemination.
