Joyce Oldham Appleby

Joyce Appleby died on December 23, 2016. Appleby was one of the United States’ foremost historians of the early republic. She enjoyed a forty-year career in academia and retired in 2001 as professor emerita at the University of California at Los Angeles. She wrote extensively about American colonial history and the formation of American political ideology, with special interests in republicanism, liberalism, and the history of ideas about capitalism. She served on the editorial boards of numerous scholarly journals and editorial projects and received many prominent national fellowships. She was past president of the Organization of American Historians, the American Historical Association, and the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic. Upon her retirement, she went on to offer many Gilder Lehrman seminars designed for K–12 teachers.
