John Adler

1927-2024

Following a successful business career, John Adler (elected October 1995), who died on June 11, 2024, developed and published innovative CD-ROM resources, based on the periodical Harper’s Weekly (1857–1916). After acquiring a full run of the periodical, he had all seventy-three thousand pages indexed and digitized, creating the HarpWeek database used in hundreds of colleges, universities, and libraries. Adler also wrote Doomed by Cartoon: How Cartoonist Thomas Nast and The New York Times Brought Down Boss Tweed and His Ring of Thieves (2008) and Thomas Nast: America’s Most Influential Journalist (2022) and founded the Adler Foundation Symposium for Alzheimer’s Disease Research, which he served for eighteen years as a trustee.
