The thirty-ninth president of the United States, Jimmy Carter (elected April 1988) died on December 29, 2024. President Carter possessed an abiding interest in American history, evidenced in his books An Hour Before Daylight: Memoirs of a Rural Boyhood (2001) and The Hornet’s Nest: A Novel of the Revolutionary War (2003). He was elected to AAS membership at the Society’s 1988 semiannual meeting in Atlanta. AAS members and guests visited the Carter Presidential Center where they were greeted by the president and then toured the Carter Library.
