1925-2024
Henry M. Lee (elected April 2001), best known as a leader of the Friends of the Public Garden in Boston, died on August 12, 2024. Under his leadership, the Friends successfully fought a plan to build office and residential towers that would have dwarfed the garden. Before he turned to civic preservation work, Lee served in the US Foreign Service with postings in Germany and Washington, DC, and then as a teacher and administrator at the Dexter School in Brookline and as headmaster of the Carroll School in Lincoln. He also served as president of the Massachusetts Historical Society and as director of the Augustus Saint-Gaudens National Historic Park in Cornish, New Hampshire
