Dolores Kendrick

1927-2017

Dolores Kendrick died on November 7, 2017. She was poet laureate of the District of Columbia and the author of the award-winning poetry book The Women of Plums: Poems in the Voices of Slave Women (1989). Other notable publications included Through the Ceiling (1975), Now Is the Thing to Praise (1984), and a collection of poems about homeless 36 In Memoriam women, Why the Woman Is Singing on the Corner: A Verse Narrative (2001). Among other honors, Chicago State University inducted Kendrick into the International Literary Hall of Fame for writers of African American descent, and she was recognized by the National Visionary Leadership Project, which celebrates African Americans who have made outstanding contributions to art and public life. She was also one of the original designers and teachers at the School Without Walls, a secondary school in the District of Columbia.
