Daniel Jordan Jr.

1938-2024

Daniel P. Jordan Jr. (elected October 1989) died on March 21, 2024. A native Mississippian, Jordan taught at the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University, published three books—notably Political Leadership in Jefferson’s Virginia (1983)—and became recognized as an authority on the state’s history. He served as president of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, which owns and operates Monticello, for twenty-three years. During his tenure, Jordan created the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies, established the Thomas Jefferson Parkway and walking trail, developed educational programs, oversaw preservation projects, led the recognition of Jefferson’s Hemings descendants, and undertook the process of recognizing enslaved people’s indispensable contributions at Jefferson’s home and farm.
