Charles B. Swartwood III died on November 16, 2023. Retired chief magistrate judge of the US District Court of Massachusetts, he brought to the court more than forty years’ trial experience as a litigator with Mountain, Dearborn & Whiting in Worcester. As a federal judge (1993–2006), he presided over numerous trials and mediated more than one hundred cases involving disputes over contracts, business/commercial law, professional liability, employment, civil rights, copyright and patents, personal injury, product liability, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, insurance, and construction. The papers of Swartwood’s grandfather, AAS member Charles Grenfill Washburn (elected 1908), are in the Society’s collections.
