Keeping the colonial government funded was a challenge once independence from Britain was declared in 1775. This broadside focuses on the details of a proposed taxation act for the General Assembly of Pennsylvania. The act outlines a proposal to levy taxes on residents in order to support the emerging structures of a federal government. Pennsylvanians were asked to raise nearly $2 million towards the annual operating expenses of federal systems, estimated at $15 million. For comparison, in 2024, Pennsylvania sent $25 billion to the federal treasury, and the Federal Budget Office estimated the nation’s expenditures to be $7 trillion.
