Philip Niger Papers, 1780.
Philip Niger (1747-ca. 1839) was born in Connecticut to Theophilus Niger and Penelope Tantipen. Niger was both Black and Mohegan and served as a private in the Connecticut Line of the Continental Army from 1776 to at least 1780. This note from the Treasury Office of the State of Connecticut documents the “forty- two pounds, two shillings and one cent” owed to him for his service during the American Revolution.
