The centennial anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and the start of the Revolutionary War sparked great public excitement in 1876. Manufacturers made commemorative toys like this wooden figure depicting “Ye Hero of ’76,” which was marketed as a “real joy to all boys and girls (and older people too).” The accompanying advertisement illustrates some of the different positions the figure could be posed in, including “how he meets his enemies” with sword drawn, and “how to serve dishonest officials” with one leg angled to kick.
