Stamp Act stamps, 1765.
The British government imposed the Stamp Act of 1765 on their colonies in North America to help pay debts incurred during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Colonists responded with “No taxation without representation,” a rallying cry that helped propel them toward revolution. When used, these three 1765 stamps would have been pasted, blue paper side down, onto documents such as deeds or contracts.
