After the fighting at Lexington and Concord in April of 1775, the British forces retreated to Boston. By June, the patriot forces held key positions and tried to drive the British back. The Battle of Bunker Hill followed, with heavy casualties on both sides. This sheet was printed in London in September and uses three maps to explain the progress of the war over a period of months. Along the major routes shown in the largest map, American troops are seen heading towards Boston, including in Worcester County where George Washington's troops march along the Boston Post Road. An inset at right illustrates the precise positions during the battle of Bunker Hill and is captioned "Charlestown in Flames."
