The New England Primer Enlarged. Germantown, PA.: Christopher Sower, 1771.
Published several years before the Revolution, this copy of the New England Primer features a frontispiece portrait of King George III. A mischievous former owner of this book made a political statement by cutting out the king’s eyes and mouth, turning the portrait’s caption “God preserve him” into an act of mockery.
