Declaration of Independence in a Newspaper

The Massachusetts Spy or, American Oracle of Liberty (Worcester). July 17, 1776.

This issue of the Spy includes the text of the Declaration of Independence, signed just thirteen days earlier on July 4 in Philadelphia. Postriders carried the text of the document from Philadelphia to the colonies where printers set it into type on broadsides and in newspapers. This issue includes the second printing of the Declaration in a Massachusetts paper―the first appeared in Salem on July 16th.
