As a teenaged apprentice, Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) fled his master’s Boston printshop with the goal of reaching London. While traveling, he briefly worked at the Halifax Gazette, the first newspaper established in Canada. During Thomas’s time in Nova Scotia, the English Parliament issued the Stamp Act. Opposed to the taxing of paper, Thomas created satirical woodcuts of skulls and the devil and added them to the printed tax stamp on the paper. This got him in trouble with Canadian authorities, and he quickly went back to Boston and his master.
