Remembering Black Patriots

William C. Nell. The Colored Patriots of the American Revolution. Boston: Robert F. Wallcut, 1855.

Black Bostonian William C. Nell (1816-1874) wrote this history to document the contributions of people of color during the American Revolution. As one of the first African American historians, Nell emphasized that history continues to shape the present. The Colored Patriots covers events from the 1770s through the 1850s and concludes with a "brief survey of the condition and prospects of colored Americans." Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), wrote the book's introduction.
