The first attempt at a newspaper in Massachusetts was Publick Occurrences, issued on September 15, 1690. However, the publisher, Benjamin Harris, did not have government permission, and his publication offended local officials. As a result, the paper was shut down, Harris was arrested and tried, and all copies were ordered destroyed. One copy survives in the National Archives in London, likely as part of the court proceedings. The first successful Massachusetts newspaper was The Boston News-Letter, which appeared on April 24, 1704. Approved and subsidized by the British government, the paper was printed by Bartholomew Green and edited by John Campbell. It lasted for over seventy years.
