The Falmouth Gazette and Weekly Advertiser began on January 1, 1785, by Benjamin Titcomb and Thomas B. Wair, printers who learned the trade working in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. At that time Maine, which did not become a separate state until 1820, was still part of Massachusetts. Falmouth later became part of Portland.
