The first press in Kansas Territory arrived at the Shawanoe mission station in 1834; however, no one used the press to publish a newspaper. The Kansas Weekly Herald of Leavenworth, the first newspaper in the territory, did not appear until September 15, 1854—twenty years later. The pro-slavery democratic paper was started during the “Bleeding Kansas” period.
