The Georgia Gazette

A Scottish immigrant, James Johnston, established The Georgia Gazette on April 7, 1763. This paper lasted until 1776. Printing was interrupted during the Revolutionary War and the Stamp Act. In addition to publishing government notices and loyalist letters, he also printed patriotic material. This attracted the attention of the local government, and Johnston shut down the paper and left Savannah. Authorities later charged him with treason.
