Clever Penmanship with Washington Portrait

This decorative print features the words of the Declaration of Independence carefully written to reveal a portrait of George Washington. Based on an original calligraphic design by William Henry Pratt, the image also includes a large eagle and thirty-six state seals. An instructor in penmanship who moved to Davenport, Iowa, from Boston in 1857, Pratt also drew Abraham Lincoln’s portrait appearing within the text of the Emancipation Proclamation.
