Broadside Printed in Newport, Rhode Island

Although the handwritten version of the Declaration of Independence is most familiar today, most colonists first saw the text in printed versions, like this broadside from Newport. Broadsides were read aloud to gathered crowds, which helped to disseminate the news. Local newspapers throughout the colonies also reprinted the document’s text. Gift of Matt Bushnell Jones.
