Known as the “Stone printing,” this full-size facsimile of the Declaration has a complex printing history. In 1820, John Quincy Adams arranged for engraver William Stone to produce 200 copies on parchment for circulation to official repositories and any surviving signers of the Declaration. Stone completed the work in 1823. His copperplate remained in the Department of State, where it was altered and restruck multiple times for decades. Likely printed after 1850, the Society’s copy is on paper, not parchment. Gift of Charles Henry Taylor.
