Reusing a Copper Plate

This print is a good example of how printing plates with designs of the Declaration of Independence were repurposed. First issued in 1819 in Philadelphia by William Woodruff, the original copperplate was reengraved and copied multiple times by at least four printers over twenty-four years. Made in New York around 1843, this version features a different portrait of George Washington than the 1819 original.
