On June 7, 1776, the colony of Connecticut issued this three-shilling note, along with other small denomination bills, to offset the lack of circulating coinage and shore up the local economy. Low value notes were used by the general population for everyday expenses. The bill was printed by Timothy Green (1737-1796), a descendant of a prominent New England printing family, whose shop also produced patriotic almanacs, pamphlets, broadsides, and the New London Gazette newspaper.
