Equestrian Portrait of Gen. Andrew Jackson at the Age of 50
Description
This engraving is a portrait of Gen. Andrew Jackson in military uniform astride a horse. He holds his hat in his proper right hand. The image is not entirely unknown, as the Library of Congress has the same portrait. The video included here shows all three copies at the American Antiquarian Society that came as part of The William C. Cook Jacksonian Era Collection. Copy 1 is an unfinished proof before any lettering was added. Copy 2 is a proof before letters where the engraving appears to be done. Copy 3 is presumably the finished print.
Among the mysteries remaining to be solved about these engravings:
- Who was the artist and engraver?
- Where and by whom were these published?
- Did it appear as an illustration in a book or was it a separately published print?
