This temperance melodrama was written in 1844 and quickly became one of the most popular plays of the nineteenth-century. This program will feature actors reading selections from The Drunkard including the famous depiction of the delirium tremens that made the work so unforgettable in its time. The program will also contain a scholarly presentation exploring nineteenth century American theater practices and the temperance reform movement. Presented in collaboration with the Hanover Lyceum Series.
